Marine Biosecurity
Invasive marine pests pose a significant threat to New Zealand’s coastal ecosystems and marine economy. Once established, they are almost impossible to eradicate. Preventing or limiting the establishment and spread of marine pests is therefore a pressing issue for environmental agencies, marine industries and environmental groups. Coast and Catchment are at the forefront of marine biosecurity management, particularly in relation to aquaculture.
We have conducted two nationwide surveys on biosecurity awareness, concerns and practices of marine farmers, commercial fishers and the seafood processing industry. The results highlighted that the aquaculture industry is vulnerable to a pest or disease outbreak, and practical recommendations were made to improve biosecurity practices. We have also conducted an international review of fish health surveillance programmes, and made recommendations for a surveillance programme for the New Zealand salmon industry. We have subsequently been assisting farmers with the development of biosecurity management plans, and assisting conservation groups seeking to re-establish mussel beds with gaining biosecurity permits.
